Over the past few years, Philly’s fitness scene has seen a boom in the popularity of “boutique gyms,” such as SoulCycle and OrangeTheory. But in my opinion, the most worthy gyms are still the old-fashioned club type. One of the best in Philadelphia is City Fitness.
This locally-grown chain has six locations across the city and offers a wide variety of invigorating classes like spinning, functional movement training, barre, yoga, dance, Olympic lifting, and interval training. Each gym also has saunas and hydromassage chairs.
In 2021, the Logan Square City Fitness location was awarded Best Gymby Metro Philadelphia for creating a gym environment that “feels like a second home to all its members.”
City Fitness is well-known for its active community involvement. In the past, the company has partnered with Avid Trails to revitalize Point Breeze’s Smith Playground.
Instructors frequently host large fitness events that turn workouts into community block parties, with event proceeds benefiting organizations such as the Make the World Better Foundation, founded by former Eagles player Connor Barwin.
