Exploring Cobbs Creek, West Philadelphia

This West Philadelphia neighborhood is bounded by Market Street to the north, Baltimore Avenue to the south, 52nd Street to the east, and Cobbs Creek Parkway to the west.

Namesake: Before Europeans colonized the area, Cobbs Creek was inhabited by the Lenni Lenape tribe, which called the creek, “Karakung,” or “the place of the wild geese.”

The creek is now named after an early Swedish settler named William Cobb who acquired land along the creek and established a homestead there in the mid-1600s.
