This Saturday, May 3, is Free Comic Book Day — an annual celebration of the medium when fans around the world are encouraged to visit independent comic book shops. There are 46 new and unique titles available this year. To celebrate, here are some of the best comic book shops in Philly.
Atomic City Comics | 638 South St.
The shop has been a staple on South Street since 1987. This year, they’re celebrating Free Comic Book Day with live entertainment, comic artists and vendors, and plenty of free comic books. Noon to 6 p.m.
Ontario Street Comics | 2235 E. Ontario St.
Fans of M. Night Shyamalan might recognize this family-owned shop from two of his movies — “Unbreakable” and “Glass.” They’ll be giving away five free comics per customer from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 3.
Garden of Earthly Delights | 7907 Bustleton Ave.
As the name suggests, there are many treasures to be found here. Aside from an enviable collection of vintage and rare comics, you can also pick up sports memorabilia, coins, and other collectibles.

Multiverse | 8026 Germantown Ave.
Sara Zia Ebrahimi Hughes and her husband Gralin Hughes, Jr. opened Multiverse in 2023 with an eye for design and a dedication to welcoming all fans and artists. It’s a beautiful community space in an industry historically unwelcoming to BIPOC folks.
Johnny Destructo's Hero Complex | 4327 Main St.
This comic book store is built on personal service and offers a monthly graphic novel club. They also carry Japanese Manga alongside American comics.
Brave New Worlds | 55 N. 2nd St.
If you’re looking for action figures, stop by Brave New Worlds in Old City — or the new location in Willow Grove. They’re also participating in Free Comic Book Day on May 3.
