Wine country in Pennsylvania and New Jersey may not be as well known as say, Napa, California, but there are many area wineries where you can enjoy a relaxing tasting experience.

Arindam Basu, a local wine educator, shared his recommendations for wineries near Philadelphia 

 last fall — though according to Basu, vineyards and wineries have something to offer every season. Here are some of his recommendations (plus some of our own research, too).

 in what is now Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, according to the Pennsylvania Winery Association. By 1900, wine production had spread to every county in the commonwealth. Today, there are over 350 wineries 

Area vineyards offer a wide variety of experiences. Some invite food trucks or bands to perform on the weekend, while others specialize in low-key tastings with cheese and crackers. Some wineries allow outside food, but many do not, so it’s best to do your research before visiting. Find out if reservations are required, and ask if the winery has rules about bringing kids, or bringing a dog, if you are planning an excursion for the whole family.

Most local wineries make a broad range of wines, said Basu. Rosés and blushes are popular, as are sweeter wines like moscato. Hybrid varieties 

 abound in our area. Vidal is often used to make a sweet, dessert wine, while Chambourcin is often pressed to make dry red wines, or blended with other reds, according to Basu.

Out of all the cities you’ve visited, which one reminds you of Philly the most?

“Philly is gritty, unapologetic, and full of creative vibes like Saigon. It’s walkable and historic like Boston. It’s community-driven like Baltimore and Portland, and there’s just so much to do and eat like NYC.”

What advice would you give someone who is about to travel for their first time?

“Go in with zero expectations. I’m a believer that you should let a place tell you what it’s about instead of acting like the authority based on what you’ve seen and read online or in the media. New places are always going to be filled with novelty and learning curves whether you’re a seasoned explorer or a first-time adventurer!”

What are your planning tips for making the most of your time in a new place?

“My travel style is to plan smart, but stay flexible. I map out an ambitious itinerary but leave a lot of room for flexibility and wandering. Trip researching can be intimidating, but a quick way to sort through the noise is to find boutique travel groups and gather inspiration from their trip itineraries or read blog posts instead of relying on TripAdvisor.”
