Election Day is here, folks! If you haven’t yet started your research, don’t panic — we’ve put together this step-by-step guide to help streamline the process.

 to find your polling place. Write down your precinct number so you know where to check in when you arrive, as polling places often serve multiple precincts.

Obviously, the biggest race to have on your radar is the presidential election. There are also four other offices that you should be prepared to vote for: U.S. Senate, state Attorney General, state Auditor General, and state Treasurer.

You may want to dig a little deeper on the candidates’ backgrounds before you decide who’s getting your vote. Several local news outlets create voter guides that compile information about the candidates and offices.

“Statistics say that someone coming from the humble beginnings that I come from, that I shouldn't be this close to this opportunity to do what no one like me has ever done before. ... I'm Black, and I'm a woman, and I've lived at the intersection of race and gender my entire life. But you need to know my village looks like the United Nations. ... I think about ... my white high school English teacher, 

, who taught me about Black women's literature, and said you need to read Maya Angelou and Ntozake Shange and Sonia Sanchez. If you read their work, they will show you yourself. And it will encourage you to move forward. I love Philly because I owe so much to this city.”

What’s the first thing that you would change if elected?

“We have to select a police commissioner. ... They need to immediately begin developing a comprehensive public safety plan for the city of Philadelphia. And we have to begin getting the leadership of every city department together, and any of our external partners ... everyone that we need in order to make our public health and safety our number one priority in the city of Philadelphia.”

What's one accomplishment you're most proud of?

 when we needed new additional revenue because we had a structural deficit, hundreds of millions of dollars. Being able to deliver that was extremely important. And then it was the 

here in the city of Philadelphia, and using that revenue, along with an additional sales tax, to help with the funding of our municipal pension system.”

What's one thing that you want voters to remember that you've done during your time in council?

. And so for returning veterans, if someone employs them, they get $5,000 off their business taxes for each year that veteran is hired, up to three years. And so that's $15,000 off their business taxes for hiring a returning veteran. What that does, by the way, is it retains employers who might be looking to leave our city, because they are hiring very skilled people that have got a lot of training, who come in to fill those needs.”

We haven't had a Republican mayor since the 1950s. What's your pitch to voters who wouldn't normally pick a GOP candidate?

“My pitch is, it's time for change. Unfortunately, after years of elected officials getting elected because they are backed by a political machine, the machine becomes more important than the people. And so many candidates do not even really campaign to the people. They vie for the backing of the political powers. The political powers will bring them the money, the endorsements, the machinery for them to get elected. And then when those persons are elected, they serve the interests of the political system, rather than the people ... And so I think people very much want to change. Without that change, we will not get to good schools, we will not get to better libraries, we will not get to good social services.”

“It's the people, right? We have such fantastic people ... even in our most difficult places, you have people who are just so resilient. ... They're very inspirational. We are a rough-and-tumble city. ... Whether you're in North Philly, or you’re in South Philly, people are so plain-spoken. And you know, they have an edge on them. That's what comes from living in parts of our city. But once you're there, they really open up, they're very warm.”

The goal is to increase voter turnout, by making it even easier to vote. When filling out digital forms at your local DMV, the computer screen will offer you a prompt where you can decide if you want to register to vote. All your voter information will then be submitted and/or updated, and voilà, you’re done ✅

 Pennsylvania residents registered to vote. But 1.6 million eligible voters across the Commonwealth remain unregistered, per 

 that states with automatic voter registration 

 in voter registration AND election day turnout. One study found that turnout increased 

, so we can address them in future segments!

Listen, I know most of us dread the DMV. But, if you’re not registered to vote, the next time you go you could knock out two errands in one. Pennsylvania residents can now become automatically registered to vote when receiving a driver’s license or state ID card. 

Pennsylvania Just Made Voter Registration Easier

Rue Landau, Bella Vista resident and former executive director of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, is 

likely to become the first openly LGBTQ city councilmember

Landau, who has received endorsements from Working Families Party and the LGBTQ Victory Fund, finished in the top five of Democratic primary candidates on Tuesday.

But this wouldn’t be the first time that Landau set a precedent. In 2014, Landau and her wife Kerry were the first same-sex couple to obtain a marriage license in Pennsylvania.
