What value is a bank that stores no money?

Enter the Ministry of Awe, the newest addition to Philadelphia’s art scene. The former Manufacturers National Bank, originally designed by architect Frank Furness, has been transformed into a surreal, immersive art experience that feels like equal parts bank, playhouse, museum, and escape room 一 while also being none of those things.

 Meg Saligman, who serves as the Ministrix of Awe and executive creative director.

“What if we built a place that treats wonder like a serious resource?” Saligman said. “What do you value? What if we create a bank where your attention is the deposit, and your curiosity is the interest rate, and what you withdraw is something you forgot you were allowed to feel?”

The Ministry of Awe indeed requires your undivided attention. As you, the “account holder,” first walk into its lobby, you find yourself in what seems like an old bank. Until you notice something 

Perhaps it’s the giant eyeball watching your every move. Or the enormous nose sniffing you. Maybe it's the disembodied head behind the bars of a teller booth.

The oddities only increase as you wander the nonlinear labyrinth within the six-story building. Each room feels like its own pocket dimension that you can enter by climbing colorful stairwells decorated with murals or venturing through hidden doors. It’s almost uncertain where the art ends and where the bank itself begins, if such a distinction even exists.

All the artwork was completed in collaboration with over 100 Philadelphia-based artists whose work ranges from live performances to set design. The worlds they’ve built explore themes of life, death, memory, connectivity, insecurity, and participation.

You can explore several departments, such as The Vault, where you can rummage through its drawers to unlock its secrets (and some human teeth); the Jewelry Box’s immersive sound experience; The Department of Final Affairs, which passes through the land of the living and the dead; and The Heavens, the celestial space that evolves with as you speak through a mic using AI technology. As you walk around, you’ll run into several characters across the departments and gain insight into the overarching story being told.

“We got to really have fun playing with ideas of management and organs around an institution,” said narrative artist Mimi Hacking. “In general, making something we hope feels alive and forestalls the foreclosure of the human soul.”

Visitors could easily spend hours in the building. No experience will be quite the same. The space not only invites artists to collaborate; it invites them to come 

 and update the stories they’ve created. How you experience an installation today can be much different six months from now, leaving more for you to explore.

“Each act of wonder yields infinite returns,” Saligman said.

Over 40 years ago, Philadelphia Mayor W. Wilson Goode Sr. tapped artist and organizer Jane Golden to helm a new city initiative to curb vandalism. Since then, the organization evolved into 

 and has completed over 4,000 murals across the city, earning Philly the title of the “Mural Capital of the World.”

Last August, Golden announced she would step down from her role after the semiquincentennial celebrations. As her time comes to a close, we spoke with her about her legacy, as well as what the future holds for her, Mural Arts, and the arts in the city. 

It was the Spring Garden [Street] Bridge … It's really long. It's like six feet tall and probably each side is like hundreds of feet long. It connects the art museum area to Mantua and Powelton, and it was covered with graffiti. There wasn't a spot on it.

“ When I was hired, it wasn't yet a full-time job. And Wilson Goode said to me, ‘If you can paint that bridge with the kids in Mantua in three weeks … you will have a full-time job, no questions asked.

“ We cleaned it up , but then we decided with the kids, they wanted [the theme to be] life in the city … so it was a lot of young people doing things. And they were working so fast that the other artists, we could barely keep up with them. We painted at night. We had flashlights. We painted on the weekend.

“ There was this big dedication at the end. And Wilson Goode looked at me, he goes, ‘You did it. Under three weeks … you have the job.’

“I'm in touch with some of those young people still as adults. I know their kids. It was such a bonding experience.”

What is that work that you're doing? How would you define that?

“ We're a program that embraces nuance. People have asked me for years, 'cause we have all these different departments. ‘Are you a public safety organization? Is it education? Is it social services? Is it art? You know, what is it?’ And I would say it's all those things with art at the center. And I think it's okay to be that way.”

What have murals done for connections that we have as Philadelphians with our city government?

“ It's important to tap into the collective imagination of Philadelphians and then be able to create these large-scale works of public art that reflect our lives. And at a time when people, the world, seems frayed and divided, what art can do is shine a light on our distinctions … and underscore our commonality and humanity.

“That's what art can do, and that all can create a deeper belief in the city and that city government can be effective and creative. And that's wonderful. It's affirming.”

What’s the State of Philly’s Arts and Culture Sector?

Pennsylvania is home to iconic bells. We have the 

, which was gifted to us by Queen Elizabeth II in 1976. Then there’s the 

, which was created to gather support for the women’s suffrage movement. And of course there's the most famous of them all, the Liberty Bell, one of the most recognizable symbols of American independence (crack and all).

Now, over 100 painted bells will be scattered across the state in celebration of the semiquincentennial. Organized by

, “Bells Across PA” consists of fiberglass bells that celebrate unique communities in Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. In Philadelphia, 16 artists worked in collaboration with Mural Arts on 22 bells that will adorn the city.

“Each bell carries the voice of a Philadelphia neighborhood and echoes it across the Commonwealth, inspiring people to move beyond the city and experience a Pennsylvania that is alive with history, culture, and possibility,” said Anne Ryan, deputy secretary of tourism for the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, in a statement.

Beginning as a Facebook group to connect Philadelphians to arts and fine crafts, the Craft Coven has since evolved to regularly hosting free and low-cost workshops. From poetry writing to open clay studios to casual “Gab and Glue” nights, the coven is helping others try a new craft (and maybe hex a nemesis along the way).

Created as an intentional space bringing crafters of color together, Craft Collective hosts free scrapbooking, junk journaling, and collage events at various partner locations in the city. Workshops like acrylic bookmark-making and bag charm-making are paid events, with prices varying.

" — has long covered the walls of our city.

Now the globally renowned artist is debuting his largest mural in the city thus far. “Uplifting Justice” joins Philly’s portfolio of murals just in time for next year's 250th anniversary of the founding of the country. Nearly two years in the making, the mural looms over Center City passersby, Love Park, and the Philadelphia Family Court building.

Fairey sat down with Hey Philly to discuss why he still has hope in these politically divided times, how he views street art as a democratic medium, and whether Philly is the best mural city in the world.

This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Your new mural is titled “Uplift Justice.” What does uplifting justice mean to you and how can Philadelphians and Americans do just that?

“Justice has so many different connotations and interpretations, but I view it as looking at what you do in the world that helps others rather than hurts others, and how you think not selfishly, but for the benefit of all humanity and the planet.

“I think that just thinking in that way makes a huge difference because that will inform a lot of the actions that we take. I think that voting for policies that promote equality, promote opportunity, promote a healthy future for the planet; those are all ways to create a more just society.

“Everyone's made a mistake so a path to a more just society, I think, involves giving people a shot at redemption as well.”

How did you select the symbols and textures included in your design and what are they intended to represent?

“The scales of justice are pretty universally understood as a symbol of justice. But this mural features a sort of a V-shape with a woman holding her hands up, looking upward, and the scales of justice are right above her in the V with a flower coming out. So the idea is of justice blooming.

“I use flowers as symbols of health and possibility. If you cultivate justice, if you uplift justice, justice can bloom, and that is good for society and for the world. I also incorporated some floral patterns. I think that flowers are really appealing visually, but also remind us of the importance of a healthy environment and natural beauty. I think we all respond to flowers because it's ingrained in our DNA that this is a symbol of springtime and renewal or health, and that's important for us to cultivate in the world.

“One of the left side floral patterns was inspired by a traditional Pennsylvania fabric design with my personal twist to it. I frequently work from things that have a historical basis, but I evolve them in my style. I like the idea that it's literally part of the fabric of Philadelphia…I love the idea of connecting the history of a place with what we'd like to see in the future of a place.

“Having the Liberty Bell [on the mural]: Next year is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and there are a lot of ideas that hold up well in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution. I'm glad that we've, in many ways, progressed in seeing the pursuit of happiness and access to liberty and justice as more equal, not just for white men. We still have a ways to go and we are facing some serious regression right now, but I think there's a throughline from the founding 250 years ago to where we are now that we should be reminded of.”

When you were last in Philadelphia in 2015, 

 were painted with the help of incarcerated individuals from the Graterford Correctional Facility. Did you have any special community collaboration for the installation of “Uplift Justice”?

“No, this mural I didn't work with a group other than Mural Arts, but with Mural Arts we did discuss a lot of the different things that we all thought were important.

“So we all discussed how to put across some ideas that made sense with some of the founding principles as well as our personal values now.

“And that's really where I think the sweet spot is. When you look at how to unite people, how to find common ground, what are the things that most thoughtful, rational people agree on? And I think that always moving towards a more perfect union and a more just society is something that most people agree on. They don't necessarily agree on the precise mechanics of how to get there, but I think having that sort of guiding principle, that north star, is quite important.”

This mural is being installed ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary and replaces a mural titled “Declaration of Independence.” What role can street artwork play in the promotion and advancement of democracy?

“If you are familiar with Marshall McLuhan's phrase, ‘the medium is the message,’ street art is a democratizing medium. And I'm lucky to work with Philadelphia Mural Arts who understand that art should be accessible to the public. It should be more democratic, and they’re working to facilitate public murals, giving a lot of opportunity to artists and an opportunity to the public to experience art outside of just elitist institutions or galleries, which can be intimidating to people.

“Now, you can go well beyond that and look at the way that a mural is a form of expression that gives someone a voice. And unfortunately, we don't have the robust voter turnout that we should where people are understanding the value of participating in democracy.

“I do think that when people feel like they're sort of spectators in the world rather than meaningful participants, when they see a piece of art that allows somebody to express an idea, they respond to that. It creates a conversation, so there's democracy in that. And it might even prompt them to try to use their voice more effectively, more powerfully, and enrich the entire democratic dialogue. The more people that participate, the better.”

One of your most well-known works is the iconic Barack Obama “HOPE” poster designed for his 2008 campaign. Do you still have the hope you artfully portrayed in that image?

“I always have hope. I think that humans can do horrible things and they can also do really kind, generous, innovative things. It depends on which narrative they seize upon. So I'm always trying to create work that has a hopeful aspiration or is critiquing what I think is the wrong direction.

“I wouldn't be so motivated to make art if I didn't think that it can help achieve change, and so my hope is always alive. It's a tough time right now. But I just work that much harder because of it.”

Your work has taken you all over the world, including Philadelphia several times. Based on your experience, is Philadelphia the best mural city?

“I'm not just pandering. Philadelphia is the best mural city because it has a long tradition of murals, which has not only been maintained, but it's been really amplified and cultivated by Mural Arts.

“Not all of the murals in Philadelphia are facilitated by Mural Arts, but the number that are facilitated by Mural Arts is absolutely impressive. And I think that murals are infectious. People who experience them in their neighborhood, they see how it makes people happy. It gives them something to talk about. It helps build community, and it's always a positive factor in a community.

“I love the irony that [Mural Arts executive director] Jane Golden came from the graffiti abatement side of things, but then having an opportunity to meet a lot of the artists, she realized that even though maybe there was some stuff that needed to be channeled in a more constructive direction, overall the energy behind the graffiti was a very positive force in people's lives — giving them something to be proud of, something to express themselves. And then she's taken that and built out an ecosystem that is incredible, and that's why I think Philadelphia is such a great mural city.

“There are other great mural cities. Miami's got a lot of good murals. L.A.'s got a lot of good murals. But they have a good ways to catch up.”

While September is a big deal for sports fans, with the return of another Eagles season to a playoff run for the Phillies, this month is also a big one for the arts. First started in 1997 as a five-day takeover, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival is back for a nearly month-long spectacle of interactive experiences, gravity-defying circus arts, and intimate dance performances.

With over 300 shows scheduled throughout September, the annual festival is a golden opportunity to engage with the local arts community at a low cost. Here are a few performances on my list.

Set in Bogotá, Colombia, this play follows three sisters as long-buried secrets unravel at their father’s 80th birthday party. One of several bilingual shows at Philly Fringe this year, “La Otra”

explores an honest portrayal of family dynamics through humor and magical realism. If you missed 

at Teatro Esperanza last year, this is your chance to see Tanaquil Márquez’s work alongside a creative partnership with Eliana Fabiyi.

This city loves puppets and we’re not just talking about Philly Elmo. With the growth of organizations like 

, the art of puppetry is having a moment in Philly. For two nights, enjoy music and a variety of puppet performances that will make you either laugh or cry. Please note that the puppet slam is intended for an adult audience.

Circus arts are a Philly Fringe staple. With several clowning antics on the schedule, one to mark on your calendars is a performance from Circus Abyssinna, founded by two Ethiopian brothers. The show features jugglers, contortionists, and acrobats telling the story of young artists chasing their dreams.

packages that nostalgia into a play that explores our relationship with the internet then and now and reconciles our childhood with the world as we know it today.

Inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic gothic horror “Frankenstein,”

this work explores Philadelphia’s real history of grave-robbery and experimentation on the deceased. As the mad scientist Dr. Benjamin Frankenstein revels in his new creation, “Frankstein’s Body” shines a light on the lives of those whose parts now belong to this monster.

What To See at the 2025 Philadelphia Fringe Festival

It’s no secret that Philly has an explosive arts scene. But it can be difficult to get your turn in the spotlight. So new production company is helping to give playwrights a chance for their works to come to life.

Lemonade Stand is taking a do-it-yourself approach to its rough-around-the-edges production style.

“It's no frills, just show up and get the kind of thing that you need – in and out, quick and enjoyable,” said Lemonade Stand founder A.J. Bloomfield said. “And so it's low stakes. It's punchy, it's vibrant, it's just lemonade. It’s homemade.”

Bloomfield graduated just last spring from Drexel University with a degree in entertainment production and design. While it may seem ambitious to start a production company straight out of college, Bloomfield is no stranger to taking a leap of faith. Having originally studied mechanical and electrical engineering, Bloomfield took a step back and asked himself: “Well, what do I really want to focus on?”

’s origins are in a senior capstone project in which students had to produce a full-length play, taking it from page to stage with readings, workshops, and a weeklong run at Plays & Players Theatre near Rittenhouse Square.

“It made me realize just how many incredibly talented people are in Philly post-graduation, in this weird middle ground between collegiate theater and training for their actual careers,” Bloomfield said.

Bloomfield was inspired to help place talent in Philly’s arts community. He joked that it used to be that everyone graduated from the University of the Arts and then started their own theater company – but then the pandemic interrupted that trajectory and the University of the Arts closed. This upheaval underscored the need for a space like Lemonade stand.

“Being able to create that community and create opportunities for early career artists especially — and while you're doing that create some new work and say some new things and see some shows that no one's ever seen before — is definitely a privilege,” Bloomfield said.

So what kind of productions can you expect from Lemonade Stand? “It's not going to be as polished a finished product as you're going to get at these regional theaters, but you're going to get the new kids on the block coming and serving up something that they think is really cool and interesting,” he said.

Lemonade Stand is now nearing completion of its debut season, which had three main productions.

 took to the stage for four nights this past March at Horan Studio Theatre. The one-act play by Liv Hershey is a dramedy following the lives of four friends as life throws obstacles in their paths. In May, two nights were dedicated to 

, with selections and excerpts from local upcoming playwrights. 

The last production to close out the season is 

 which represents a full circle moment for Bloomfield since that was the play he produced as part of his senior capstone project. Written by Liv Shoup, the play follows two West Philly roommates navigating life’s failures. It’s inspired by the team’s own experiences of transitioning into life post-college and getting through “these really stupid wrenches that are thrown at you,” from grad school and job searches to relationships.

“[It’s] all these very simple problems that everyone goes through, but it's fun to dramatize and make fun of it,” Bloomfield said. “The catalyst was making something that was about this period of life and accepting failure and finding your kind of family through that. It's very much made in a way that you're supposed to see yourself on stage, and that's really comforting.”

Lemonade Stand is already committed to four productions for the next season.

“I don't want the Lemonade Stand to become the next regional theater in Philly; I'm not trying to make it into something that is not,” Bloomfield said. “Our personal goal with the Lemonade Stand is to create a home for this community of new work and of new artists, and eventually ... find some successors and find a home that it can live in more permanently, and let it continue to grow past us.”

New Production Company Creates Home for Philly Playwrights and Debut Works

Lemonade Stand Serves Up Punchy Projects From Philly Playwrights

Philadelphia’s green spaces are favored sites for hiking, bird watching, and finding reprieve from the hustle and bustle of daily life. But at one forest in Roxborough, nature becomes the center stage for drama and dance.

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education

 is hosting “TERRA: Bodies & Territories” on its grounds. Philadelphia-based choreographer Silvana Cardell’s latest project works with the forest as a collaborator, exploring the relationship between women and the land while honoring the ancestral protectors who preceded us. This is not new territory for the 

, whose work regularly addresses social issues and breaks norms.

 “What does it mean to live inside a body that is constantly politicized, controlled, or dismissed?” Through times of war and political turmoil, how are women and the earth united in the shared experience of exploitation, but also in the ability to survive despite these threats?

The non-linear, experimental dance set is carried by an ensemble of women and femme dancers ranging between the ages of seven to 78. Each sequence is intimate and requires the dancers to trust each other and the land, as they raise each other up and climb the trees with great agility. Dancers must be aware of every rock, branch, and creature in the space and adapt movements within each performance. The range of ages represents what has come before and what will come after and allows the performers to weave their memories together to learn from one another.

The score for the play is a collection of audio collected straight from the site, capturing how the sounds of urban life and the environmental sanctuary blend together. For months, composer Devin Arne recorded the ambient sounds heard in the forest to turn into instruments, such as the melodic songbirds, babbling stream, and passing trains’ blaring horns and screeching rails. At one point, Arne even buried the mic into the ground to record stomps. At other times, the incorporated sounds were improvised.

The score shifts the tone in the space automatically. An audience member may be at peace due to the soft breeze and sunlight, only to later feel tension in the body upon the ominous calls of crows and booms of a torrential storm as the dancers’ movements become more erratic, evoking urgency.

The natural light and its warmth is inviting and illuminates the dancers in a way studio lights can’t do justice. The production is low-impact, with minimal materials used for staging and sculptures. Set designer Sarah Kavage utilizes 

, such as extended branches transformed into a manicured hand and others whittled to look like heels.

“TERRA” allows for attendees both familiar and unfamiliar with the Schuylkill Center to interact with nature and the organization’s mission in a new way.

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education acts as the stage for a performance that highlights the ancestral guardianship of the Earth.
