Philly’s been hosting a monthly art event known as First Friday
since the early 90s. It originated as a gathering place in Old City for art lovers to enjoy late night exhibits and free wine. Over the years, it’s expanded to other neighborhoods.
With so many open art galleries, vendors, live music performances, and free wine and snacks, where exactly should you start?
Chelsey Luster, a Philadelphia-based curator, educator, and visual artist, shared her inside perspective into how to make the most of First Fridays on the City Cast Philly podcast. Here are some of her tips for how to plan the best First Friday experience.
🎨What Galleries to Check Out
Chelsey says the first thing you should do is pick a neighborhood or area to spend the entire night.
- Old City: Paradigm Gallery + Studio
- Center City: Philadelphia Art Museum, The Barnes Foundation
- North Philadelphia: Vox Populi
- Waterfront: Cherry Street Pier
🍷 Don’t Drink Up All the Wine
One of the highlights of First Friday are the wine offerings or drink specials, but don’t get greedy. Chelsey’s pro tip: plan to go to a bar after your galley visit.

Support Artists With Your Dollars
First Friday is a time to celebrate local artists! If you’re interested in buying an artist's work at their showing, just know that not all galleries will have the price listed next to the artwork. Chesley says to look for the curator as they’ll be “the best person to talk about the finances.” Or just talk to the artist if they’re floating around the gallery. Don’t see anything you like there, but want to support the artist? Chesley adds that you could also set up a private studio visit.
📍Other Spots to Add to Your Itinerary
These galleries may not have specific events on the first Friday of every month, but Chelsea recommends you check out these exhibits and snack offerings.
- Center City: Rodin Museum
- West Philadelphia: Institute of Contemporary Art (they have great food!)
